The sense of occasion
Premium packaging cues work because people use the pack as a stand-in for a product they can’t yet taste. If the pack feels considered, they assume the contents are too, and that assumption is what turns into more business.
Premium cues raise the price people expect to pay, so brands can often hold a higher price point and better margin without the product feeling overpriced. Premium packaging also heightens the sense of occasion and builds trust, which pays off in three ways:
Gifting. A pack that looks giftable opens up a second sales channel. With Christmas coming, this is the big one for spirits.
Lower first-purchase risk. A shopper trying an unfamiliar brand reads quality cues as a promise that it won’t be a waste of money.
Visibility after the sale. Bottles that look good get photographed, kept and reused as decanters, so the brand stays in the home after the bottle is empty.
Kocktail’s Glass series is an excellent example of premium execution that creates a sense of occasion while staying functional. The brand presents its cocktails in a sealed glass, a more elevated experience than typical ready-to-drink (RTD) equivalents. The glass gives the feeling that the drink has been mixed and served just for you, turning crafted cocktails into part of the moments that matter most: dinner with friends, or a thoughtful gift.
